1. TURN DOWN THE POWER – NO MORE KW LICENSE FOR VK

Announced as the first item in this weeks WIA broadcast, Phil Waite president of the WIA announced that the ACMA have told the WIA that the High Power Trial will NOT be extended past the end of August.

The reason given, was that the ACMA believe that some of the respondents in the test did not understand EMR and the regulations related thereto.

It was added that this lack of knowledge was not just related to Amateur Radio Advanced licensees in the test but to other classes of license holders as well (this is despite many of us receiving a letter saying that our submission of station data has passed the ACMA requirements).

The WIA will be allowed to re-apply for the KW permit next year – presumably by proving education around EMR has taken place.

It is expected that station inspections of a sample of those who took part in the “test” will now take place to check that the KW capable equipment is no longer being operated at more than 400W.

At this time, there appears to be no restriction on owning amplifiers capable of a KW as long as when inspected, they are found to be set to emit a maximum of 400W PEP.

2. Club to get new projector.

The time has finally come to put our old data projector out to pasture. It gave great service over the years, but the old guys wheezing and moaning is now interrupting meetings and it can’t manage the higher resolutions now demanded by newer PC applications and presentations.

The new projector is an In-Focus SP8600 and as well as being “whisper quiet” it also can throw it’s light further and brighter than older models and of course supports full HD Video (1080p) presentations. This is a high quality device with 3 years warranty, including one year on the bulb (usually considered a “consumable” and not under warranty on lesser projectors). It is sure to give many years of reliable service to the club and can be something we can be proud using at public events such as the Wyong field day.

3. Last Chance to operate KW from the Club – RD Contest.

With the news that with the end of the test the permission to run 1KW PEP output has been removed by the ACMA, that last big chance to run up our linear amplifier is the Remembrance Contest from 13:00 (03:00 UTC) on Saturday 17th. August through to the same time on Sunday 18th.

Doug VK2MDC is still looking for operators, especially for the overnight section of this 24 hour contest – if you are available and wish to be one of the last to use our Linear Amplifier at it’s full potential at least for a year, here is your last chance!  Please contact Doug as soon as possible!!
